You may have been forced to pay into WSIB but do not let it be your only cover. Many injured workers have been disappointed and let down at their most vulnerable time, when they are injured and unable to work.
WSIB has prided themselves on the fact that they have dug themselves out of a hole where the entire system was destined to collapse. Today WSIB's unfunded liability is down to $7.5 billion from its $14.2 billion unsustainable high in 2012.
An MOL commissioned survey shows that WSIB's "claims allowed" rate fell from under 2% of unemployed workers in 2004 to just over 1% in 2013. However the number of fatalities and critical injuries per year show no change.
So I ask you: how do you think WSIB turned its situation around to be a financial sustainable system for injured workers? By denying claims and Bill 119's increase in premiums of course! View WSIB 2015 First Quarter Report
Alec Caldwell the founder of CARAHS recently wrote a number of articles regarding WSIB and claims for Canadian Contractor. The responses that these articles have generated have been overwhelming, many not only commenting on the articles but sharing their personal trials and tribulations with WSIB. Private insurance companies use a worker's physician or specialist to adjudicate their injury or sickness claim. These doctors work at arm's length and have no connection to private insurance companies. Rate Increases - WSIB will increase your rate based on your claims experience. Some private insurance companies guarantee level rates to age 65 or will only increase as a group and not on individual claims. Rates Grouping - WSIB construction rates remain one of the highest, compared to other industries. Private companies' construction rates are normally lower than WSIB. It is a wise decision to have a back up cover. Many companies such as Manulife, Great West Life and others protect workers 24 hours a day 7 days a week for accidents and sickness (and in some instances anywhere in the world). Private companies can refund 50% of your premiums paid over an 8 to 10 year period for no claims, or claims that are kept below 20% of the premiums paid over the period.
